Employer-led project fuels changes in the Construction industry
'Constructing our Future' is one of the latest initiatives backed by the LSPA, which aims to raise the profile of the building and construction industry, as well as support teachers and improve educational attainment.
Led by representatives from the building and construction industry, 'Constructing our Future' aims to address the existing skills shortage within the sector and increase the number of motivated young people entering the industry.
These objectives are being met through:
1. Constructing our Schools - the production of teaching resources developed by teachers and construction employers that facilitate links between the school and key partners who are working on their school's construction project.
2. Information and Advice - the provision of opportunities for young people, and those who advise them, to find out more about industry opportunities.
3. Building and Construction Champions Network - an innovative network of experts from over fifteen disciplines within the industry, all of which are able convey first-hand insights and up-to-date knowledge to young people.
Mike Dorgan, chair of HEP's Building & Construction Task Group said at the launch of 'Constructing our Future';
"Skills shortages within our industry are a significant and growing problem. 'Constructing our Future' is a first and the benefits to young people making their choices of courses and careers are immense.
The initiative is not a 'quick fix' solution to the existing skills shortage problem, but it will go a long way to presenting a positive profile of the industry and educating young people to the diverse range of careers available."
